Disability Workshop Development Enterprise (DWDE) is an NPO 060-907 that is registered as a Non-Profit Company with registration number 2000/023277/08 and enjoys Public Benefit Status (PBO number: 930-024-385) from the South African Revenue Services (SARS). DWDE was formed in the Western Cape Province in March 2007 after a research study conducted with the Protective Workshops and Self-Help groups of Persons with Disabilities.

It was then established that there was a need for a coordinating Umbrella Body to assist the sector with its challenges. Currently, 42 Protective Workshops and Self-Help groups fall within this umbrella titled “The Protective Workshop Managers Forum” in which DWDE serves as the Secretariat.

DWDE facilitates strategic economic transformation opportunities for persons with disabilities. The organisation is committed to providing services that are innovative as well as responsive to the issues of disability equity, maintaining world-class standards of excellence. DWDE programmes are dynamic and the organisation strives to continue to find ways that will improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable sector of persons with disabilities in South Africa.
